Niki Ruman
SCCA SRF National and SRF Pro Driver
Niki grew up surrounded by
racing, watching her mom and dad autocross race-prepared Corvettes. So it
was natural for her to take to the sport.
She currently campaigns in the SCCA Pro Spec Racer Series.
In addition to her own racing career, Niki and her sister Amy are
the co-managers of their father's SCCA Trans-Am Series racing team.
Their father, Bob, is the team owner and driver. Their mother, Barb,
is a well-known former top-ranked Corvette solo driver, although she
rarely has the opportunity these days for her own racing, since she
is the Trans-Am team's coordinator.
For the Rumans, it's a family
business. Ruman Racing also maintains and prepares Niki's SRF.
Niki began her racing career in 1988, campaigning a Corvette in
autocross/solo competitions. Her first SCCA wheel-to-wheel
competition took place in 1995 in IT classes.
In 1997 Niki competed in the professional series that featured
Spec Racer Fords, at Reno, Mid-Ohio, and Mosport. Her best finish
was fifteen at Mosport. That same year, she also competed in six
SCCA National SRF races with the best finishes at Mosport in tenth
and Summit Point in eleventh.
In 1998, Niki finished twenty fourth in the Spec Racer Ford Pro
Series points standings, while competing in four of the seven series
races. She was the first female to place in the top ten in SRF Pro
Series history when she finished ninth at the West Michigan Grand
Prix on July 24th. Other finishes in the SRF Pro Series in 1998
include fifteenth at Mid-Ohio, sixteenth at Watkins Glen, and twenty
second at Pike's Peak.
Niki also ran
in two SCCA National events in 1998, and she competed in her first
endurance race at the 24 Hours of Moroso on a family-based team,
with sister Amy, father Bob, and two other drivers. The team
finished twelfth overall and fifth in class.
Niki, along with sister and teammate, Amy, have been invited to
join the inaugural season of the Women's Global GT Series, an
invitation-only world showcase of top female racing drivers. At the
first WGGT race, Niki qualified third overall, but a competitor and
a flat tire dropped her out of qualifying.
In January 1999, Niki and Amy were on the only all female team to
compete in the 24 Hours of Moroso. Their Spec Racer Ford was
involved in a crash in the twentieth hour while running third in
class. The team placed ninth in class and forty first overall.
Niki lives in Washington, D.C. where she is Director of Marketing
at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research. She
has a B.A. degree with a double major in Entrepreneurial-Management
and American History from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA.
When she isn't racing, Niki enjoys mentoring, hiking, scuba
diving, floor hockey, fencing, skiing, traveling and reading.
