Race ReportClaremont Speedway, August 12, 2000by April May Gelineau
Editor's Note: April May drives an '84 Mustang in the Mini-Stock Division at Claremont Speedway, a one-third mile semi-banked asphalt oval in New Hampshire, U.S.A.
Do you want the good news or the bad news first??? Oh all right then, I will get the bad out of the way and then tell you the good. It was just about a full moon (well not till Tuesday the 15th) but the drivers in most of the divisions were getting a little "hairy" early!! The weather cooperated, a few sprinkles early and then all was fine. The Modified's had two races, maybe they should start counting the caution laps because it took them about an hour and a half to run 30 laps The fastest cars go the slowest. I hate to pick on those guys but jeez enough all ready! It doesn't matter how many laps they have it is not enough to make them run a "semi" clean race. The prostocks then decided that if the mods don't have to run a good race than neither do we. So needless to say after lap 10 or so they had to restart single file, but of course over an hour had gone by, by then. If you can't see where this is headed, the track has a 12:00 midnight curfew, getting the idea yet?? We were scheduled to run last, after the antique cars and the 2nd modified race which means midnight came and went and we didn't race. Anticipating all night just to have to go home, is such a let down!!
I started 4th in my heat race, which for once turned out not to be so bad! We were coming out of turn 2 and the guy if front of me got sideways. Well I decided to keep my foot in it and go around him on the outside, finding out afterwards that by doing that I made it four wide. I had no idea, probably a good thing or would never have tried it!! HaHa.
So the Scratch Racing team did very well in their qualifying attempts. I really wanted a 1st with Danimal but I am MORE than happy with a 2nd! I get the pleasure of starting 6th AGAIN in the feature. With two slower cars in front of me and a line of fast cars on the inside, so we will have to wait and see. We also made some setup changes to the car. Danimal asked me what my hands were doing and I was able to tell him. The guys asked me how the car felt after the first practice and I said loose. They didn't like that because the tire temps were showing tight. I told Danimal what my hands were doing and he said it is loose.
Jack Bateman also gave me a tip for my hands, and I tried that and I think that helped too, so thanks so much to Danimal, Jack, and Allan Hammond for your bits and tips of wisdom. Everybody is eager to give you advice on how to drive, often times you just need to listen, cyfer, and throw most of it away, but I think I got me a good batch this week. Also thank you "beloved" guys on my crew for keeping up your persistence, and finally getting us better than we have been. Next goal- MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT WITH NO THROTLE LINKAGE PROBLEMS????? I think we have this problem fixed, but we actually haven't had a complete night yet so will let you know next time! AND THEN MAYBE I WILL GET THE CHANCE TO WIN MY HEAT RACE - Getting ALOT closer here!! Until next time, drive fast turn left!
