Plans for the third annual Lyn St. James Driver Development Program are well underway. Lyn St. James, the 1992 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year, has created a comprehensive four-day training course that can help your racing career. The program is part of the Lyn St. James Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to promote greater opportunities for drivers, especially women, in the automotive industry.
St. James' program includes instruction in vehicle dynamics, health and fitness and training, public speaking, and media training, on-track driving, instruction and debriefings by mechanics, seminars on the business of racing, and presentations by leaders in the motorsports industry.
"I always believed there was a void in the correct training of up-and-coming race car drivers which is why only one-half of one percent make it to the professional ranks in this sport," says St. James. "My focus was to create a program that was comprehensive and tapped into the missing elements." Drivers spend one day honing driving skills with the balance of the program covering the off-track side of the racing business.
The cost for the four day program is $495.00 (not including travel and accommodations) for experienced drivers 16 years of age and up. Additionally, a two day Youth Program, running concurrently, for girls and boys, ages 8 to 15, is given. The cost for the two day program is $249.00.
