Type of Racing: Drag Racing
Race Series: IHRA Divisional/National Circuit
Introduction: Aspen is a Colorado native that has
been involved in racing in many ways since childhood. Through
the influence of her father she was introduced to the many
forms of auto racing, such as stock cars, Indy cars, dirt
track, motocross, and of coarse drag racing.
"For me, a major milestone was back in 1986, and the
much anticipated opening of the Texas Motorplex." It
was at this track where she witnessed her first live drag
race. "Everything from that trip still seems so vivid
in my mind, the smell of fuel and rubber that hung in the
air, the roars of the nitro burning engines ringing in my
ears, and the vibrations from the cars making passes on
the track. It was the most awesome experience a person could
have!" Later on, this track would be the host for a
lot of milestones in Aspen's life.
After that, Aspen was always looking for a way to be involved
in racing until she was old enough to get behind the wheel.
She became a crewmember for an SCCA Spec Racer Ford team.
She spent several years learning the trials and tribulations
of road racing, including a trip to the Valvoline Runoffs
at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Coarse, and a brief stint on
the pro-circuit. About the time Aspen graduated from high
school, she decided that she was going to "retire"
from the sports car life to peruse her dream of drag racing.
In 1998, she attended Frank Hawley's Drag Racing School,
and completed the gas dragster course. It was there that
she laid the foundation for her skills as a driver. She
then returned to the Texas Motorplex and completed runs
to obtain her Super Comp license.
Aspen began gaining seat time by attending several local
bracket races, and NHRA divisional events. In the fall of
1999 she competed in her first NHRA national event at the
Texas Motorplex, were she completed well and won several
rounds. Most drivers try their whole career to win rounds
at a national event. Aspen did it on her first try. This
was definitely a sign of things to come from this rookie
driver.
She continued to compete, and win rounds, at several local
bracket and NHRA divisional events throughout the 2000 -
2001 racing seasons
Current Season: Aspen is currently supporting her
husband and his goal to
become
the first Summit Super Series Champion. They are also in
the process of
building her a new car that will hopefully debut in the
2003 IHRA Top
Dragster Circuit.
Racing Goals:Aspen's goals are very simple. She
wants nothing more in life
than to race full time with her husband by her side.
"To me there is nothing more exciting than racing,
especially now, since I have my wonderful husband to share
my enthusiasm with," says Aspen.
Personal: Aspen is a newlywed, she and her husband
Wes Tarkington got hitched on May
11, 2002.
Special Thanks to: Thanks to Racers World, Vince and
Korran have done so much to help her family get on the "fast
track".
Aspen also has these words of thanks:
"Thanks to my family, Mom, Dad, Jennifer. Ya'll have
always believed in me,
and you continue to give me your support. You'll never know
how much it
means to me."
"Thank you most of all to the most wonderful husband
on the planet! Wes,
you
are my heart. I love you!"
